Daydreamer
As a young girl growing up on a small dairy farm in Wisconsin, I often found myself daydreaming of far-off places and adventures in distant lands. Little did I know that at 21 years old, when I left Wisconsin, I would embark on a journey that led me to live in four foreign countries spanning a total of 12 years, and travel to over 70 countries.
My life truly began to unfold at 21. Seeking adventure, I visited my brother in Cheyenne, Wyoming, with aspirations of eventually moving to California. It was there that fate intervened - I met Steve. His career in the Air Force took us on an incredible journey: five years in Cheyenne, followed by two years in the Azores, Portugal; three years in Okinawa, Japan; and ultimately, Hawaii, where he retired from the military, and we lived blissfully for eight years.
I thought we’d stay in Hawaii forever, but, one night sitting on the lanai, looking at the beautiful Koolau Mountains, listening to the soft air rustle the palm tree overlooking the pool, I said outload, “it’s time for an adventure”. Now it was my career with the Government that took us back overseas. First Naples, Italy for three years for true “adventure”, then to Virginia for seven, then back overseas to Heidelberg and Wiesbaden, Germany for seven years.
I felt at my best when exploring new territories and cultures. Navigating foreign languages and customs brought unforgettable experiences while building lifelong friendships. Although I faced the heartbreaking loss of Steve to cancer in 2016, I continue to chase my passion for adventure—be it with friends, family, or on my own. I continue to live beyond my childhood daydreams, capturing the rich diversity of our planet and its people through the lens of my camera.
